I’ve lived in Atlanta, and vacationed in Savannah and Hilton Head Island, which has gone to crap. Tybee Island, from all I’ve read, watched, and heard about from friends is AWESOME!
I live in Savannah. Tybee has its pros and cons as with any place. It’s less crowded then Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach. The island is very small and there hasn’t been a lot of heavy building there. There are only a few large hotels to mess up the views. Baring some event like fireworks or “Orange Crush”; there’s never huge crowds. There’s a lot of parking (metered) but it can be hard to find. Most small side streets have a couple of dozen spots. Eat at The Breakfast Club in the morning and Tango’s at night.
Now the terrible; the sand isn’t very smooth. There are a lot of shells fragments, sticks, and other sea things. Walking barefoot away from the surf can be tough. There are no waves because of all the sand bars out to sea. I went last year while a hurricane was a hundred miles off shore and the Weather Channel claiming twenty foot waves. I found the largest waves I’ve every witnessed at Tybee: three feet. Usually, it looks like more like a lake then an ocean.
